CRYPTO LICENSING IN SPAIN.
Spain moved aggressively and thinned the field. The pre-MiCA VASP register sat with the Bank of Spain, which stopped taking registrations on 30 December 2024; the CNMV is now the MiCA CASP authority and started accepting applications in September 2024. Spain first set a short comply-or-quit transition ending 30 December 2025, which created real cliff-edge risk, then extended toward the full 18-month period (to 30 June 2026) after an ESMA update. The telling detail: so far only BBVA has obtained a MiCA licence in Spain — this is a large market with a narrow door.

WHAT YOU ACTUALLY PAY FOR.
MiCA's own-funds floors apply — €50,000 / €125,000 / €150,000 by service class, or a quarter of fixed overheads. Spain does not compete on a lower number; it competes as a big domestic market supervised by the CNMV, whose review runs to around three months for a clean file but who has authorised very few CASPs so far. Budget for a securities-regulator-grade application, not a light registration.
Capital is the floor; the real cost is a CNMV-grade file — governance, AML, ICT/DORA and investor-protection controls a securities regulator will test. The low licence count tells you the effort involved: this is not a jurisdiction you clear cheaply. The upside is a large home market. Scope a quote to your exact CASP services and plan for a serious review.
Compare firmsDo not treat Spain as a soft option because it is EU. With only BBVA licensed so far and a regulator that runs securities-grade reviews, an under-built application is unlikely to clear. Watch the transition dates too — Spain changed them once already, so confirm the current deadline with the CNMV rather than relying on an older figure. If you want speed and a lighter file, a smaller CEE regime may fit better.
How many crypto firms are licensed in Spain?
Very few so far — as of the latest data only BBVA had obtained a MiCA CASP licence from the CNMV. Spain is a large market with a demanding, securities-grade authorisation process.
Who regulates crypto in Spain — CNMV or Bank of Spain?
The Bank of Spain ran the pre-MiCA VASP register (closed to new entrants on 30 December 2024). The CNMV is the MiCA CASP authority and handles all new authorisations.
What is the deadline to get a Spanish CASP licence?
Spain first set 30 December 2025, then extended toward 30 June 2026 after an ESMA update. Because the date has already changed once, confirm the current transition deadline directly with the CNMV.
